KinActive Kamp

Not Your Average Pediatric Physical Therapy Intensive

In 2020, Dr. Emily Heisey created her KinActive Kamp program after out-of-state families that were seeing her virtually voiced their need for in-person services. While online PT was helping, she knew face-to-face sessions would be even better, so she began inviting families to come see her face-to-face! When they started to show interest in a trip to Texas, Emily knew she needed to create a program that ensured the journey to DFW was worth their while.

So she picked up the phone, called Dr. Matt Otteman, and pieced together her first Kamp – a goal-driven physical therapy and chiropractic intensive program designed to not only help kids reach goals that once seemed impossible, but also give families a new sense of hope.

What started as a month-long, 20-session intensive has since expanded into a program with two-week, four-week and custom options. Through these Kamps, Emily, Matt and the rest of our team have helped over 160 kiddos achieve life-changing milestones that they were previously told they’d never reach, and we at KinActive Kids would love nothing more than to do the same for your family, too!

Overview

KinActive Kamps are intensive programs that combine pediatric physical therapy and chiropractic care to help kids achieve new gross motor milestones and developmental goals. This program is offered in two, three and four-week formats, and are ideal for:

  • Kids who have plateaued in their current physical therapy treatment program
  • Parents craving a new approach to their child’s physical development
  • Families who have limited physical therapy and/or chiropractic resources in their community
  • Any child who’s developmental concerns have been consistently dismissed, ignored or downplayed (trust your gut, mama!)
  • Parents who know in their heart that their kid is capable of more than what they’ve been limited to, and are ready to challenge said limitations

When you enroll in a KinActive Kamp intensive, you’re giving your child the opportunity to overcome developmental obstacles, reach new milestones and achieve enhanced mobility so they can live their best, most independent lives.

Our Kamps currently book out about 2-3 weeks in advance. If you’re interested in enrolling, please fill out this inquiry form to get the process started. Please note that a 25% non-refundable deposit is required once you’re ready to book.

Does My Child Qualify for Kamp?

In short, YES!

There are no requirements or qualifications that get a child accepted or denied from our Kamp intensive program. All kids are welcome! Our pediatric physical therapy and chiropractic intensive is not dictated or limited by a child’s diagnosis. We are passionate about helping all kids unleash their full potential and, unfortunately, dated treatment models tend to limit an individual’s capabilities based on what diagnoses are written in their chart.

In addition to having families join us from all over the U.S. and across the globe, we have had the honor of working with children who have been diagnosed with some of the world’s most complex and/or rare genetic, neurological and physical conditions. Some of which include:

  • Niemann-Pick Type C
  • Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy
  • Quad Spastic Cerebral Palsy
  • Polymicrogyria
  • Lissencephaly
  • Arthrogryposis
  • Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2
  • Micro-preemies (children born at 25 weeks or earlier)
  • En Utero Stroke Recovery
  • Traumatic Birth Injuries and TBIs
  • Hydrocephalus
  • Au-Kline Syndrome

With over 250 Kamps and counting, this list is ever-growing. At KinActive, we don’t shy away from a challenge. We know parents will do anything for the betterment of their childrens’ lives, and we are here to walk alongside you, support you and show your child what they are truly capable of.

FAQ

What can I expect during a KinActive Kamp?

Your child will come to therapy for 5 weekly sessions that combine both PT and chiropractic treatment. Since we operate Monday-Thursday, your little will double up one day each week with one morning and one afternoon session. You can expect each appointment to be about an hour. You’ll also be given exercises and techniques to utilize during 20-minutes of purposeful play on your off days.

Your little one will work very hard during their KinActive Kamp and you will see signs of that – this is a good thing! Think of it in terms of exercising – if you started exercising new muscles every day, you would be pooped, too! From previous experience we have seen kids sleep more and show signs of muscle soreness during their Kamp.

My child hates PT. Is it OK if they’re fussy?

Our team is incredibly “scrappy”, as we like to call it, and work really well with any kiddo who is fussing or having a difficult time. We’ve been known to pull out all the stops to find the best toy, treat, reward or distraction to help get the job done while keeping your child as happy as possible. Our intensives are hard work, and sometimes when kids come to us they’ve never cried during therapy, but will cry here. Often this is because they have not been pushed to their potential and, in our experience, the crying settles down as time goes on. At the end of the day, we’re all on your kiddos team and if there’s anything that needs to be changed for treatment we will absolutely do that and honor parents requests.

Are Kamps covered by insurance?

KinActive Kids is a cash-based clinic and, therefore, we do not accept any form of insurance or provide superbills for our services.

Any ideas to help with funding?

Although we don’t accept insurance, we can take HSA payments for our services. We also encourage families to look into getting grant funds through local foundations and community efforts. Many of our Denver locals have been able to obtain funding through Rocky Mountain Human Services, for example!

What if we need to cancel or reschedule our Kamp?

While Kamp deposits are non-refundable, they are 100% transferable. Should you need to reschedule your Kamp after booking, we ask that you do so with as much notice as possible (Ideally at least 30 days, but we understand that life can be unpredictable!), and your 25% deposit will be applied to your updated Kamp dates.

We’re from outside the U.S., can your team help us acquire a Visa?

We sure can! We know that the Visa process can be long and time-consuming. Please let us know ASAP if you’re going to need any documentation and/or a Letter of Medical Necessity so we can get you all of your travel requirements in a timely manner.

Can other family members receive chiropractic care?

This question is music to our ears! Dr. Otteman is happy to provide chiropractic treatment to family members of active Kampers. Please note each treatment is $50, with payment due at the end of the session.

Do we have to do chiropractic care?

Though strongly recommended, you can choose to opt-out of chiropractic care as part of your KinActive Kamp. However, please note that these services are bundled into our Kamp pricing, and opting out of services will not change the cost of your KinActive Kamp.

I have other kids. Are they allowed to be in session, too?

It depends on age! Typically we have a room open for older kiddos to play in while their sibling does their Kamp sessions. Siblings and other relatives are also invited to hang out in our waiting room, if needed. The less distractions during your Kamp, the better!

What if we can’t stay for two weeks?

That’s OK! We can create a program that works for you during your enrollment process.

Can we stay for more than four weeks?

Absolutely! While not always necessary, we’re happy to accommodate longer-stay Kamps. Please note that this does not apply to extensions of already booked Kamps. While we want to eagerly say “of course!!” to Kamp extensions, the ability to add onto an existing reservation solely depends on the team’s availability during the week(s) following your initial, scheduled Kamp. If you decide you want to extend your Kamp, we will absolutely work with you to try and make that happen! However, we can’t guarantee that we’ll have the availability to accommodate all Kamp extension requests.

Is it possible to extend our Kamp?

Yes, but we can’t guarantee clinician availability. If at any point you are interested in extend your Kamp or booking a follow up Kamp, please get in touch with your Kamp Coordinator to see what openings we have.

Do you offer an alumni discount if we want to come back?

Absolutely! If you choose to return for another round of Kamp, you’ll receive 5% off. This discount applies to all Kamps after your first!
